GCSE PE: Theory Unit 8 Lesson 2/3 Skeletal System 1 of 28
2
Please copy down the date, title and learning outcome and complete the starter
The Skeletal System Learning Objectives: Focusing on exercise and the skeletal system Learning Outcome: A I am able to give the names and locations of all the joints in the body, I can define the word joint. I can give sporting examples of joints. I can give examples of sporting injuries and define what each injury is. B I can define the word joint and explain different joints and give examples of sporting events that use that particular joint. I can explain different types of injuries. C I can define the word joint and can give examples of different joints. I can define different sporting injuries such as dislocation.
3
The Skeletal System
4
Joints Key term: A joint is where two or more bones meet
In Physical Activity the type of joint that allows the most movement is a Synovial Joint
5
Movement at Joints. Task: Everyone stand up. Move your joints. Concentrate on the way the joint moves and in which directions. Try moving your elbow and knee left and right.
6
The Hinge Joints. It allows the joint to straighten (Extend) and bend (Flex) Can you guess where the hinge joints are in the body? Knee and elbow
7
Sporting Examples of a Hinge Joint.
Extension Flexion
8
Ball and Socket Joints. Ends of a long bone.
Long bones are Femur (thigh) and Humorous (upper arm) Can you guess where they are? Shoulder and Hip.
9
Sporting examples of Ball and Socket Joints
10
Complete the task below
1.Name The joints
11
Injuries It is the nature of sport that people will hurt themselves
There are different injuries to the skeletal system that occur in physical activity: Fractures Sprains Dislocations Tennis and golfers elbow Green stick Fractures Stress Fractures
12
Fractures Types of Fracture:
Simple (Closed) –fracture in one line, no displacement of bone * Compound (Open) – broken bone is displaced and breaks through the skin
13
* Stress Fracture – small hairline cracks in bone, overuse injury usually in lower leg from impact on hard ground. Common injury amongst long distance runners. When fatigue occurs, muscles lose ability to absorb shock so the stress placed upon the bone is increased.
14
Greenstick Fracture – is where the bone only partly breaks
* Greenstick Fracture – is where the bone only partly breaks. It is common at the wrist for example when running a relay in the sports hall and using the wall to turn.
15
Next Slide… Weak Stomach.. Turn away now!!
On the next few slides are they open or closed Fractures…

Injuries to joints Complete the table in your workbooks.
Tennis elbow – overuse injury, pain inside the elbow Dislocation – where the bone at a joint is forced out of its normal position Sprains – damage to a ligament usually involving twisting or turning the wrong way, e.g. sprained ankle Torn cartilage – Elastic substance found at the ends of the bones, tearing it can often be caused by pivoting on one foot. Very painful on inside of knee and joint usually bent Complete the table in your workbooks.

Plenary: What have we learned today?
Q-Time!! You will be given a word that is relevant to today's lesson. You each have one question (yes and no answer questions) to figure out what is on the paper.
