Lesson 4

2. VERSE FOR THE JOURNEY
John 16:  "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14  "He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15  "All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.

3. NAMED BY ENCOUNTER
The Holy Spirit did not indwell believers until after Pentecost; however some people had a measure of the indwelling Spirit for specific callings such as prophets
But others had encounters with God where they received ministry information, counsel, and comfort
Often they called God by the name of the encounter
In addition, some names for God indicate position:
Elohim: This name refers to God’s incredible power and might. He is the One and only God. He is Supreme, the true God in a world that promotes many false gods and religions. He is the one on whom we can fully rely, He is Sovereign, He is the one we can completely trust.

4. NAMED BY POSITION
Yahweh is God’s proper name, from the Hebrew word for “I AM,” He was, is, and always will be
Abba “Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father.” Galatians 4:6
El Elyon is a name used through the Old Testament revealing God is above all gods, that nothing in life is more sacred. He is indeed the Lord Most High, the One who reigns supreme.
El Roi means “The God Who Sees.” He is watching over all, that He sees the affairs of people, and knows when we feel lost and unloved.
El Shaddai means “God Almighty” and reminds us that He is all-powerful.
Adonai means Lord. Read in place of YHWH

5. SPIRIT IN THE OT
Numbers 11: The LORD therefore said to Moses, “Gather for Me seventy men from the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and their officers and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you. Then I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take of the Spirit who is upon you, and will put Him upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you will not bear it all alone.”
Numbers 27:18  So the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him;”
Judges 3:9-10… the LORD raised up a deliverer for the sons of Israel to deliver them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother. The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel.

6. GIVEN AND REMOVED
1 Samuel 10:6-9 "Then the Spirit of the LORD will come upon you mightily, and you shall prophesy with them and be changed into another man. It shall be when these signs come to you, do for yourself what the occasion requires, for God is with you. And you shall go down before me to Gilgal; I will come down to you to offer burnt offerings and sacrifice peace offerings. You shall wait seven days until I come to you and show you what you should do.”Then it happened when he turned his back to leave Samuel, God changed his heart; and all those signs came about on that day.
1 Samuel 16:13,14  Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD terrorized him.

7. RETURNING TO GOD
2 Chronicles 15:1-3, 7-8 Now the Spirit of God came on Azariah the son of Oded, and he went out to meet Asa and said to him, "Listen to me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin: the LORD is with you when you are with Him. And if you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you. For many days Israel was without the true God and without a teaching priest and without law…"But you, be strong and do not lose courage, for there is reward for your work.” Now when Asa heard these words and the prophecy which Azariah the son of Oded the prophet spoke, he took courage and removed the abominable idols from all the land of Judah and Benjamin and from the cities which he had captured in the hill country of Ephraim. He then restored the altar of the LORD which was in front of the porch of the LORD.

8. PEOPLE WHO WON’T HEAR
2 Chronicles 24:20-22  Then the Spirit of God came on Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people and said to them, "Thus God has said, 'Why do you transgress the commandments of the LORD and do not prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, He has also forsaken you.’” So they conspired against him and at the command of the king they stoned him to death in the court of the house of the LORD. Thus Joash the king did not remember the kindness which his father Jehoiada had shown him, but he murdered his son. And as he died he said, "May the LORD see and avenge!” Luke 1:51... from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God; yes, I tell you, it shall be charged against this generation.'

9. EZEKIEL’S CALL
Ezekiel 2:1-5 Then He said to me, "Son of man, stand on your feet that I may speak with you!” As He spoke to me the Spirit entered me and set me on my feet; and I heard Him speaking to me. Then He said to me, "Son of man, I am sending you to the sons of Israel, to a rebellious people who have rebelled against Me; they and their fathers have transgressed against Me to this very day. I am sending you to them who are stubborn and obstinate children, and you shall say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD.’ "As for them, whether they listen or not—for they are a rebellious house—they will know that a prophet has been among them.

10. POWER TO SPEAK & PROPHESY
Micah 3:8  On the other hand I am filled with power— with the Spirit of the LORD— and with justice and courage to make known to Jacob his rebellious act, even to Israel his sin.
In OT times, the Holy Spirit spoke and empowered people selected by God to fulfill His purposes for His people
Joel 2:28-29 "It will come about after this that I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; and your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
We live in the days that the OT prophets longed to see

11. BLESSING FOR ISRAEL
Ezekiel 39:27-29 "When I bring them back from the peoples and gather them from the lands of their enemies, then I shall be sanctified through them in the sight of the many nations. Then they will know that I am the LORD their God because I made them go into exile among the nations, and then gathered them again to their own land; and I will leave none of them there any longer. I will not hide My face from them any longer, for I will have poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel," declares the Lord GOD.
Isaiah 32:15  Until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fertile field, and the fertile field is considered as a forest.
Isaiah 44:3 'For I will pour out water on the thirsty and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring and My blessing on your descendants;

12. FUTURE MESSIANIC KNOWLEDGE
Zechariah 12:10-11 "I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn. In that day there will be great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the plain of Megiddo.”
The Holy Spirit was at work throughout the Old Testament
The first Pentecost after the death of Christ showed us that the New Covenant was in full force and effect
The Spirit was being poured out on all believers
