Total “wealth” comprises property assets (net of mortgage and other borrowings), private pension assets, financial assets (net of borrowings) and physical assets amounting to some £9trn in total;
o/w c40% property, 40% private pensions, 10% financial assets, 10% physical assets.
By age of occupants, the % of households estimated to own assets of c£500k or more is:
21% (35-44’s)
39% (45-54’s)
51% (55-64’s)
37% (65+).
“Bank of Mum & Dad” is assumed to comprise households with occupants aged and assets of c£500k or more.
“Bank of Granny & Grandpa” is assumed to comprise households with occupants aged 55+ and assets of c£500k or more.
Comparisons with major UK commercial banks are based on their published (gross) assets at end 2012 so as to be contemporaneous with the ONS Wealth and Assets survey.
