Experiment #2: Parachute Shape

Problem Does the shape of a parachute affect the rate it falls?

Hypothesis: Hypothesis: If…Then…

Introduction: Facts about what you already know. Don’t forget to make connections here. (Should be about 5 sentences in length)

Materials Create a complete list of materials that you will need to conduct the experiment. Make sure you include the amount of each material.

Procedure You will write up your own procedure.
You must take into consideration the following information when writing your procedure: The size (square area) of each parachute must be the same.

You will test 3 different shapes.
You will draw a diagram of each of your parachutes (include dimensions of each). Circle-50cm area= pi r2 = cm2 Square-area=s2= cm2 s=44.3 cm Triangle-area=1/2bh=1962.5cm2 b=62.65cm h=62.65cm You will calculate the speed and average speed for each shape of parachute. You must drop each shape parachute 10 times.

All variables other than shape must be kept constant: Same weight, same drop height, same length, same # & type of shroud lines, etc.

Data: You develop your own data table that suits the needs of the data you plan to collect. Look at the last 3 experiments if you need some ideas.

Results:(graph) Sketch a graph to best represent your data.

Conclusion: My hypothesis was…………. Restate hypothesis with results

· Analysis:. What did you learn that would help your design
·          Analysis: What did you learn that would help your design? Unusual events? Further questions?
