What is my research about?
Research is about applying minimalist design principles in AR task instructions. Minimalist design principles – based on the research of Hans Van Der Meij and John Carroll (1996) Design Principle Sample of AR recommendations Choose an action-oriented approach The object is recognized in the field of view and highlighted indicating that an action is to be performed. There should also be the option for a more detailed explanation of the task if required. Anchor the tool in the task domain Focus on what people need to know in order to complete the task. The task should interest the user in attempting other tasks. Support error recognition and recovery Hints or information may be used to support error prevention. Provide help where errors are most likely to occur or where correcting the error may be difficult. In AR, the help should be context-sensitive. Support reading to do, study and locate Provide shortcuts in the form of symbols or icons that become activated when the object is recognized. These icons may be linked to information or help.
7
Results of Research (so far)
First Survey: Aimed more at Instruction Designers and Information Developers) – 12 respondents (some of them significant experience in instructional design) – addressed how minimalist design principles could be applied in AR -– feedback was that recommendations were mostly clear or very clear - this was used to construct the prototype Second survey: Based on the prototype and aimed at a broader audience – looking for more responses but so far the feedback has been constructive – keeping in mind it is a prototype Prototype Limitations: Not a real-time environment. Shows examples of how information and help could be given to support the user. The object recognition may not represent true AR environment. More exploratory information could be included in a real-time environment and would be context- sensitive.
