Homecrest Presbyterian Church Worship of the Lord’s Day February 12th, 2017 6th Sunday of Epiphany
2
Gathering Around the WORD Call to Worship (Psalm 119:1-8)
Happy are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD. Happy are those who keep his decrees, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways. You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently. We will praise you with an upright heart, when we learn your righteous ordinances. We will observe your statutes; do not utterly forsake us.
3
Gathering Hymn # 32 “I Sing the Mighty Power of God”
I sing the mighty power of God that made the mountains rise, that spread the flowing seas abroad and built the lofty skies. I sing the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day. The moon shines full at God's command, and all the stars obey.
4
Gathering Hymn # 32 “I Sing the Mighty Power of God”
There's not a plant or flower below but makes thy glories known. And clouds arise, and tempests blow, by order from thy throne, while all that borrows life from thee is ever in thy care, and everywhere that we can be, thou, God, art present there.
5
Gathering Around the WORD Call to Confession Our God is a loving God who reaches out to us, in spite of our imperfection and rebellions. God is willing to reveal God’s mercy and grace upon those who come and confess with their hearts. Let us put aside our personal pride and come to God in humility and faith.
6
Gathering Around the WORD Prayer of Confession (in unison) Holy God, we confess that we bow down before other gods; we have turned our hearts away from you. Our worship of work and devotion to consumerism disorders our love of you and each other. Forgive us, O God, and mend what is broken, and that we may be one with you. Amen.
7
Gathering Around the WORD Declaration of Forgiveness In God’s mercy, we have been given a new life. God is willing to take us in, even if we do not deserve to be taken. Sisters and brothers, in Jesus Christ, we have been forgiven. Thanks be to God, Amen.
8
Gathering Around the WORD Gloria Patri
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.
9
Gathering Around the WORD Passing of the Peace of Christ
Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” (John 14:27)
10
Proclaiming the WORD Message to the Youth/ Prayer of Illumination
11
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading – Deuteronomy 30:15-20
15See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. 16If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the LORD your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess.
12
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading – Deuteronomy 30:15-20
17But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, 18I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. 19I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses.
13
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading – Deuteronomy 30:15-20
Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, 20loving the LORD your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the LORD swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
14
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading – 1 Corinthians 3:1-9
3And so, brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. 2I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food. Even now you are still not ready, 3for you are still of the flesh. For as long as there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving according to human inclinations? 4For when one says, “I belong to Paul,” and another, “I belong to Apollos,” are you not merely human?
15
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading – 1 Corinthians 3:1-9
5What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. 6I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labor of each. 9For we are God’s servants, working together; you are God’s field, God’s building.
16
Proclaiming the WORD (Deuteronomy 30:15-20 and I Corinthians 3:1-9)
Laying Down the Faith Foundation
17
Responding Hymn # 321 “The Church’s One Foundation”
The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord. She is his new creation by water and the word. From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride. With his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died.
18
Responding Hymn # 321 “The Church’s One Foundation”
Elect from every nation, yet one o'er all the earth, her charter of salvation: one Lord, one faith, one birth. One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued.
19
Responding Hymn # 321 “The Church’s One Foundation”
Though with a scornful wonder this world sees her oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, yet saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up: "How long?" And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song.
20
Responding Hymn # 321 “The Church’s One Foundation”
Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace forevermore: till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest.
21
Responding Hymn # 321 “The Church’s One Foundation”
Yet she on earth has union with God, the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won: O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, may live eternally.
