Review of Friday’s Experiment
As an individual, were you better off feeding yourself, or pooling your resources? When did you end up with more food, as a group or as an individual? Did the changing prices end up effecting your ability to purchase food as an individual? If hunger, starving and poverty are conditions that exist within a country, what is a possible solution?

Authoritarian States Authoritarian States are national governments that attempt to protect and preserve their authority and keep all people under their authority powerless and controlled. Authoritarian States attempt to limit the freedom of people in order to stay in power. The two most common forms of authoritarian states are fascist states (fascism) and communist states (communism).

Fascism Fascism is a form government that uses its power to eliminate all laws, institutions, or people that oppose the nation or government. The most famous example of fascism is Nazi Germany, which was controlled by Adolf Hitler. An analogy for fascism is, “changing the rules of the game to make sure that you always win.”

Communism Communism is a form of government where:
the government owns everything they try to make everyone equal by distributing wealth equally there is only one political party, the Communist Party. One of the most famous examples of Communism is China under Mao Zedong. An analogy for communism, “you raise two cows, the government takes them and distributes the milk they make to everyone.”

How Authoritarian States Happen
Authoritarian States have usually developed in the following way: Emergence - A crisis provides an opportunity for an authoritarian government to gain power Consolidation and Maintenance - An authoritarian government removes obstacles and opposition to allow them to stay in power Aims/Policies - An authoritarian government creates goals and establishes policies in an attempt to reach those goals

Research Simulation Authoritarian States often form during a crisis or some other challenging circumstances for a country. Given the deep political divisions in the United States today is there an opportunity for a more authoritarian government than our current one to develop?
