Unit 1 Robotics Test
2
Unit 1 Robotics please place all answers on you online portfolio…
Define Engineering… (Please type your answer into your online portfolio after creating a title label “Unit 1”.)
3
Unit 1 Robotics 2. The term “design” was listed above, but what exactly does this mean? When it is said “engineers design a bracket” what is being described?
4
Unit 1 Robotics 3. There are many different types of engineers, each specializing in a different field of knowledge, each with a specific set of problems they specialize in solving. There are almost as many fields of engineering as there are fields of scientific inquiry! List examples on your online portfolio – don’t forget your explanation of this list…
5
Unit 1 Robotics 4. So what happens if the problem being solved is so large and complicated that it involves more scientific and practical knowledge than any one engineer can understand?
6
Unit 1.2 5. Every student involved in competition robotics will have the opportunity to work on a design team at some point. There are a number of considerations they should keep in mind to achieve success: List the considerations on your portfolio…
7
Unit 1.2 6. The term “quantitative” is used a lot when discussing engineering arguments or justifications, but what does this really mean?
8
Unit 1.2 7. The term “quantitative” is used a lot when discussing engineering arguments or justifications, but what does this really mean?
9
Unit 1.3 8. As discussed above, there is no single engineering design process. Throughout this course students will use an 11-step design process as they conceptualize, design, and create a robot to compete in head-to-head robotics competition. List all 11 steps on your portfolio…
10
Unit 1.3 9. Explain in your own words what happens in step number one of the design process.
11
Unit 1.3 10. Explain in your own words what happens in step number two of the design process.

Unit 1.3 11. Explain in your own words what happens in step number three of the design process.
13
Unit 1.3 12. Explain in your own words what happens in step number four of the design process.
14
Unit 1.3 13. Explain in your own words what happens in step number five of the design process.
15
Unit 1.3 14. Explain in your own words what happens in step number six of the design process.
16
Unit 1.3 15. Explain in your own words what happens in step number seven of the design process.
17
Unit 1.3 16. Explain in your own words what happens in step number eight of the design process.
18
Unit 1.3 17. Explain in your own words what happens in step number nine of the design process.
19
Unit 1.3 18. Explain in your own words what happens in step number ten of the design process.
20
Unit 1.3 19. Explain in your own words what happens in step number eleven of the design process.

Unit 1.4 20. Describe in your own words what an engineering notebook is…
22
Unit 1.4 What is Autodesk Sketchbook… Can you access this program…
23
Unit 1.4 23. What is Autodesk Fusion 360? Can you access this program…

24. Using nothing but ten letter size sheets of paper, students must create a freestanding tower as tall as possible in 30 minutes. Students are required to spend 5 minutes planning and designing their tower before they receive any materials. Students will then be given ten sheets of paper and allowed ten minutes for prototyping; at the end of the prototyping period ALL paper and prototypes will be collected. Teams will then be given 15 minutes to implement their final tower design. How long did your tower stand? Unit 1.5
25
Unit 1.6 What does an engineer do?
25. Answer the following questions in your Engineering Notebook: What does an engineer do? What is something that you have used today that was designed by an engineer? Why is classical mechanics such an important part of engineering? How does having constraints placed on a design change the engineering process? Why is making a prototype so important in the design process? What have you learned from the iterative process? Unit 1.6
