1 The SW AHSN Hackathon An Overview

2 Introduction & Warm Up (5 mins) Identify the Challenges (15 mins)
Today Introduction & Warm Up (5 mins) Identify the Challenges (15 mins) Refining a Challenge (15 mins) Feedback and finish (10 mins)

3 Background The SW AHSN is developing a hackathon methodology
It will support collaborative problem definition and solution identification across health and care in the South West The methodology is being developed with a strategic delivery partner, the Innovation Unit The first hackathon was held in September 2016 with Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust This, and subsequent hackathons are being used to develop and refine the methodology

4 Six Hackathon Principles
A hackathon starts with a health and care challenge (problem) but not all challenges will be suitable for a hackathon. The Problem Owner needs to be of sufficient seniority to action the hackathon’s recommendations. The hackathon is jointly owned between the SW AHSN and the Problem Owner’s organisation. Commissioners, Providers and Clinicians should all be engaged early in the process, and commit to the hackathon and its findings. People from anywhere that we can think can help are actively sought to take part. We need to keep things moving as fast as possible!

7 In Groups…. 1. Identify the challenges
Evenly distribute yourself into each corner of the room. Brainstorm different challenges you are facing that you think this method could help solve. 2. Refine the challenges Pick 1 challenge in your group you think is particularly applicable and develop it further. Think about: Who is involved/not involved? How significant the problem is within the health & care system? What the desired outcomes are? Are you tackling the symptoms of the challenge, or the root causes? How other stakeholders would describe the challenge? How might a member of public define the problem? What assumptions are you making? Repeat if you finish before time.
