2 Prospective directions for TG6 by considering different dimension parameters

3 Motivations Tackle some basic questions for TG6
How many dimensions (parameters) do we need to consider? Solutions need to stick to the PAR Raise possible directions for solution Allow multiple solutions. Allow partial solutions.

4 Dimensions To Be Considered
Operating frequency bands Medical and non-medical applications Low and high data rates Wearable and implant BAN Narrow band and wide band technologies

5 As They Are in the PAR Frequency bands (0575-09-0BAN) Applications
ISM bands as well as frequency bands approved by national medical and/or regulatory authorities Applications a variety of applications including medical and personal entertainment Data rates data rates up to 10 Mbps is required Wearable and implant for use in close proximity to, or inside, a human body Narrow band or wide band technologies There is no restriction

6 Candidate Frequency Bands
( )

7 Frequency band vs. Data rates
Low rate 100 kbps 1 Mbps High rate 5 Mbps Mbps MICS (world wide) BW≤300 kHz WMTS (regional) 8.5kHz<BW≤6MHz ISM (world wide) selectable UWB (world wide) BW > 500 MHz

8 Medical vs. Non-medical
MICS (world wide) YES NO WMTS (regional) ISM (world wide) UWB (world wide) 2.4 GHz is crowded with , , , a Be cautious! Coexistence may become an issue

9 Application vs. Data rate
Low rate High rate Medical MICS YES Maybe WMTS No ISM UWB Non-medical Again, cautious on 2.4 GHz

10 Some Observations Both world wide frequency bands and regional frequency bands (~ ) Technologies could be either wideband (e.g. FM-UWB) or narrow band (e.g. FSK). (Different technologies have different fits) It would be difficult to use a single radio to meet all requirements (Multiple …)

11 Possible Solutions Solutions based on different radios on different bands. (multiple solutions) No need for a single solution to meet all because of different requirements. (partial solutions) Common MAC and upper layers are important for control and inter-connection. (Single MAC)

12 Is It Reasonable? Choices for markets and users
trade off among different parameters Many precedent standards 802.11, , a As “hinted” in PAR in close proximity to, or inside, a human body One thing more to be kept in mind low power consumption is on the top requirements in TG6

13 For Success Get all candidate solutions on table for
sounder understanding Focus more on commonality for merge by sticking to the PAR Compromise and harmonization
