1 Triumph and Tragedy Supreme Court Edition

2 Overview You will be conducting research on a specific Supreme Court case that YOU will argue has both triumphant and tragic historical perspectives.

3 The Court Cases Brown Vs. Board of Education (1954)
Is it unconstitutional to segregate black students and white students in public schools?

4 The Court Cases United States Vs. Nixon (1974)
Does the president have executive privilege or must they follow rule of law

5 The Court Cases Bush Vs. Gore (2000)
Did Florida issue an unconstitutional recount in the presidential election?

6 How to Conduct Research
YOU will be responsible for conducting your own research on this topic. You will be using the iPads, but here are some important things to consider: 1. Is the source reliable? (When in doubt, ask!) 2. Is the source a primary source, or secondary source? 3. Does the source give you information you can use to support a claim?

7 What are you looking for?
It is your job to show that your given supreme court case was both a tragedy and a triumph. Triumph: Achievement of GREAT things! Tragedy: Event that causes distress or grief

8 More of a Triumph or Tragedy?
After conducting your research, decide whether your court case is more of a tragedy or more of a triumph. Be prepared to support that, BUT, also be prepared to address evidence of the opposite side, as well.

9 3-2-1 3 Ways in which your given supreme court case is a triumph or tragedy and text evidence to support it (whatever one you think it’s more of) 2 Ways in which your given supreme court case is a triumph or tragedy and text evidence to support it (whatever one you think it’s less of) 1 Large, impactful way in which this court cases is relevant today
