2 Urban Heat "Islands" Urban heat "islands" can be observed with the channel IR3.9 under clear sky conditions, especially during the night-time hours; Channel IR3.9 has a strong response to sub-pixel land-surface temperature variations in urban areas (see also fire detection); Higher temperature difference between city and surroundings measured at night at 3.9 m than at 10.8 m;
