Islamic & Christian knights invade each other’s empires to “convert” them Pope Urban II hated but aided the Byzantine Emperor - Alexius I Using Christianity, knights “justified” protecting Jerusalem (the Holy Land) from Muslims 2. Knights wanted: Adventure—converting infidels Wealth—wanted $$$$$ Fame—wanted that hero status Looting—if it wasn’t nailed down, they took it “All who die, whether by land, by sea, or in battle against the infidels, shall have immediate forgiveness of sins!” – Pope Urban II

7 4th Crusade = Near-death of Byz. Empire
“Picture it – Constantinople, 1204” Christian knights take out their trade competitor (Byzantine Empire) instead of fighting Muslims How did it nearly end in 1204? Greed led to the city burning, widespread looting, eventually the knights lose control of the city Original Byzantine citizens retake the city, but were very weak afterwards leading to invasion

8 Effects of Crusades Feudalism Ends – Crusading knights/lords sold their land which freed their serfs! Kings get sooo much land and power! Anti-Semitism – hostile towards and/or prejudice to Jews. Disagreements in religion led to attacks on Jews in Europe. Powerful/Modernized Nations Emerge - Spain, Portugal, England, & France

9 Ottoman Empire Emerges
Ottoman Empire, territory surrounded the remaining Byzantine Empire Invasion of 1453 – Remaining Byzantine Empire is crippled and easily conquered
