3 Prepositional Phrase A phrase is a group of words that acts like a single word in a sentence. A prepositional phrase acts like a modifier, a word that changes the sense of another word in a sentence. A Prepositional phrase includes a preposition, its object (the noun or pronoun that follows the preposition), and any modifiers. Prepositional phrases tell you where, when, how, why or to what extent. The scientists fly over the Southern California desert. The scientists have a passion for desert rocks. One of them shoots photos from the plane.
