Disease management is a system of coordinated health care interventions and communications for defined patent populations. Disease management empowers individuals, working with other health care providers to manage their disease and prevent complications. Traditionally this has been called plant disease control but current social and environmental values preferred plant disease management. Principles of Plant Disease Management : PD

Principles of Plant Disease Management : PD
The goal of plant disease management is to reduce the economic and aesthetic damage caused by plant diseases. Plant disease management mainly bases upon five principles 1. Avoidance of the pathogen 2. Exclusion of the pathogen 3. Reduction or eradication of pathogen inoculums 4. Immunization or resistance to pathogen 5. Integrated approach Principles of Plant Disease Management : PD

Principles of Plant Disease Management : PD
1. Avoidance of the pathogen The aim of the avoidance of the pathogen is to enable the host to avoid contact or To ensure that the susceptible host and favourable environmental condition for the pathogen not concide. This can be made by following strategies;- 1. Proper selection of geographic area 2. Selection of field 3. Choice of timing of sowing 4. Selection of disease free seed and planting stock 5. Cultural practices Principles of Plant Disease Management : PD

2. Exclusion of the pathogen The main objectives of exclusion of the pathogen is to prevent the entry of a pathogen into a country, state or an area. For this, there are some regulatory methods which can be enforced by some regulations framed by the Government. The methods are:- 1. Quarantine measures 2. Seed certification 3. Plant disease notification 4. Prevention of sale of diseased plants Principles of Plant Disease Management : PD

3. Reduction or eradication of pathogen inoculums The aim of reduction or eradication of pathogen inoculums is to reduce or eradicate the number of pathogen propagules present in the field before crop is planted. To achieve them following devices are employed:- 1. Cultural practices 2. Physical methods 3. Chemical treatment 4. Biological control Principles of Plant Disease Management : PD

4. Resistance (Immunization) to pathogen It is one of the most important and effective principles of achieving successful management of plant disease. Plant breeders either search or develop such resistant varieties of plants in which the host defends itself against the pathogen. Resistant varieties of plants produced by- 1. Conventional breeding techniques 2. Biotechnological breeding techniques Principles of Plant Disease Management : PD

5. Integrated approach The principles of integrated approach is the use of a combination of different disease management strategies with aim to develop sustainable system of disease management based on a sound understanding of the whole crop eco system. This approach is called integrated disease management (IDM). Principles of Plant Disease Management : PD
