A SOCIAL PROBLEM is a condition that at least some people in a community view as being undesirable
A SOCIETAL PROBLEM exists when something is “wrong” with some aspect of society.

Everyone would agree about some social problems, such as murders and DWI traffic deaths.
Other social problems may be viewed as such by certain groups of people. How do we decide what’s wrong? First we should decide what the goals of society should be, and then determine the degree to which societal conditions further these goals. Societal problems exist if societal conditions DO NOT further these goals.

What are the goals of our society?

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Every newspaper is filled with stories about undesirable social conditions.
Examples include crime, violence, drug abuse, and environmental problems. Such social problems can be found at the local, state, national and international levels.

HOW DO YOU DETERMINE IF IT’S AN ISSUE?
Ask yourself two questions Is the issue debatable? Are there 2 sides? Can the government help to alleviate the situation, if so, how?
