Warm Up 11 4/21 1. Factor that causes population growth to decrease 2. Density-DEPENDENT factors affect populations that are (large/dense or small/scattered) 3. What is an example of a density-independent factor? 4. April 22nd is Earth Day to support environmental protection. What will you do this week to help our Earth? List as many as you want but be sure you can do it for the whole week!
2
For the rest of the school year Ms. Lam will…
Not use water bottles Unplug lights/electronics from socket when not in use Walk to school once a week
3
Population lab due Thursday Packet+ Test Friday
Ch. 4 weather/niche/symbiosis/succession Ch. 5 population Ch. 6.3 biodiversity
4
Biodiversity & the Future
The Earth holds a variety of species & resources. Humans can have a direct influence on these things.
5
Biodiversity Def: the sum total of the genetically based variety of all organisms in the biosphere Def: Variety of life in an area determined by the # of different species in that area. Earth’s greatest natural resources Provides medicine Provides food and goods
6
Ecosystem diversity- variety of habitats, communities
Species diversity- number of different species Genetic diversity- different forms of genetic information
7
Threats to Biodiversity
Extinction- species disappears from all/part of its range Endangered species- in danger of extinction
8
Habitat fragmentation
Ecosystem splits into pieces
9
Hunting for sport, food, medicinal purposes
10
Pollution Biological magnification – harmful substances increase in organisms at higher trophic levels
11
DDT Used to kill insects Nonbiodegradable
As it moves up the trophic levels in food chains, its concentration increases
12
Invasive Species introduced species that reproduce quickly due to lack of predators that control their population
13
Conservation Wise management of natural resources
Enforce environmental laws Strategies: captive breeding, setting aside lands, protecting species Challenges: may require change of lifestyles (ex: fishing & logging provides income to many people)
14
What are the 3 types of biodiversity?
15
When land development divides a habitat into isolated “islands,” the result is called
Deforestation c. magnification Reforestation d. fragmentation
16
A species that enters an environment where it has not lived before is called a
Endangered species c. threatened species Invasive species d. predator
17
Ozone Depletion a. Ozone layer – part of our atmosphere made up of ozone (O3) Absorbs UV light b. Use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s) has broken it down
18
Global Warming the increase in average temp of biosphere
Due to increase in greenhouse gases such as CO2 Results: drought, famine, melting of glaciers, flooding
