1 Unit 3 Notes: Mitosis

2 (1) Big Ideas: Mitosis is used to make more Non-Sex cells (called Somatic Cells). 1 identical copy of original cell is made. Start with1 Cell, end with 2 identical cells. Genetic Info Stays The Same: 2n  2n or Diploid  Diploid Diploid? 2n?  Refers to the original full set of DNA.

3 Let’s Watch A Video…

4 (2) Mitosis Stages Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase

5

6 The Parent Cell (Before Interphase of the Cell Cycle)
Nucleus Un-Condensed DNA Cell Membrane

7 (3) Prophase “Before” Phase
Chromatin condenses into chromosomes and chromosomes visible. Nuclear Membrane dissolves. Centrioles prepare to help with division.

8 Dissolving Nuclear Membrane
Centromere Cell Membrane Sister Chromatids (Replicated DNA)

9 (4) Metaphase Sister Chromatids pair up at Metaphase Plate by each other’s centromere. Say What??? Sister Chromatids  Matching Segments of DNA (identical genes and alleles). Metaphase Plate  The center of the cell. Centromere  The center of a chromosome.

10 Pairs of Sister Chromatids
Centromere Cell Membrane Metaphase Plate

11 (5) Anaphase Sister Chromatid Pairs Separate.
Each side of the cell gets 1 copy of the genetic information!

12 Yes… I know this looks like a butt…..
Cell Membrane Separated Chromosomes

13 (6) Telophase Chromosomes are completely separated.
Chromosomes uncoil. Nuclear Membrane Re-Forms.

14 Reforming Nuclear Membrane

15 Identical Copies! (Now that’s redundant.)
The Daughter Cells (After Mitosis)
