1 Do Now: What is the difference between the atomic number and the atomic mass. ( total of 3 sentences, tell me what each is and how they are different from each other.)

2 Essential Question: What do elements in the same group have in common?
The Periodic Table Essential Question: What do elements in the same group have in common?

3 Objectives Students will be able to determine what the difference between groups and periods. Students will be able to determine the trends associated for each.

4 What is the Periodic Table?
Definition: Table where elements are organized by increasing atomic number (number of protons)

5 Who was Dmitri Mendeleev?
He devised the first periodic table based in atomic mass. However some elements were out of order.

6 Who was Henry G. J. Moseley?
In 1913 Henry arranged elements by atomic numbers and is what we use today.

7 How is the periodic table arranged?
Periodic Table is arranged by groups and periods.

8 What is a Group? Vertical columns of elements with similar properties.
Groups are numbered 1-18. Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in their outer energy level. Vertical (up and down)

9 What is a Period? Horizontal (side to side)
Horizontal rows of elements that contain increasing numbers of protons and electrons. Each row in the periodic table ends when an outer energy level is filled. Horizontal (side to side)

10 What is your Assessment going to look like?
Get into a group (2 people per group) You are going to make a poster. Bring your supplies (markers, glue sticks, color pencils etc..) Rubric will be provided. You will be graded on poster, content, and presentation.

11 The topics you will be presenting and teaching the class.
1. Metals 2. Alkali Metals 3. Alkali Earth Metals 4. Transition metals 5. Halogens 6. Noble Gases 7. Lanthanide & Actinide
