Presentation on theme: "What is Chemistry & Matter?"— Presentation transcript:

What is Chemistry & Matter?

What is chemistry? No… it isn’t the emotional attraction you have for someone

What chemistry is in this class
It is a field of science that studies the composition, properties, and reactions of matter, specifically at the level of atoms and molecules

What is this?

And if you are really gooD...

What is an atom? A basic unit of a chemical element An extremely small amount of a thing or quality wCM

An Atom up Close

What is an element? An element is a substance consisting of atoms which have the same number of protons (atomic number on periodic table) Elements cannot be broken down using chemical methods Example: Ag (Silver)

What are protons & Electrons & Neutrons?
Proton: A subatomic particle that has a + electric charge. Electron: A subatomic particle that has a – electric charge. Neutron: A subatomic particle that has no net electric charge (mass = larger than a proton)

Diagram of protons, electrons, & neutrons

What is a Compound? It is a substance formed with two or more chemical elements that are chemically bonded together (Hint think of compound words) Two types of chemical bonds: (Covalent and Ionic)

Chemical Compounds

Chemical bonds Covalent Bond: formed by the sharing of one or more electrons. A chemical bond is formed when electrons are shared between 2 atoms. Example of Covalent Bond: Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

Types of Chemical Bonds:
Ionic Bond: is when a + charge ion forms a bond with a – charged one. One atom transfers electrons to another. Example of Ionic Bond: Sodium Chloride (NaCl)

Some Terms: What is a Molecule? A molecule is the smallest particle in a chemical element or compound. Molecules are made from chemical properties of that element or compound Molecules are made up of atoms that hold each other together by chemical bonds Example: What are these? H2O, O2, CO2

A long time ago… Philosopher Aristotle believed that matter consisted of 3 stages… Any ideas? 1. Fire 2. Air 3. Water

What is Matter? Matter is a physical substance that occupies space
There are 3 stages of matter… what are they? (take a few minutes to try and research them/ talk with a partner)

3 Stages? Liquid (measured by volume)

Next Gas (measured in cubic centimeters) What is a gas? oxygen, carbon

NExt Solid Measured by mass

Matter song: qvfw
