1 AS-LEVEL FINE ART SECTION 8 DAVID MACH

2 LEARNING OBJECTIVES YOU WILL…
Learn about the unique sculptural work by David Mach. Learn to analyse his work both in written and visual formats. Learn to respond to his work in a similar manner initially using a pin art device. Produce a transcription piece using a photo of your pin art to recreate it as a 3D sculpture. Create a piece of performance art by photographing and videoing your outcome.

3 Mach sculptures DISCUSSION
Can you see what is unique about David Mach’s work? What media do you think Mach has used here to create this sculpture? Why do you think he has chosen to create something like this in matches? What do you suspect Mach does with this work once finished? Why do you think he might choose to set it alight?

4 Mach sculptures

5 Mach sculptures

6 Task 1 First, you are going to use one of the Pin Art gadgets and working in small groups, you will play around with this, taking photos of your own and other people’s faces pressed into it.

7 Task 2 Upload the photographs onto the computer and print a contact sheet which you can look through. Print off 1 photo A4 size in black and white which you will use to create your own Mach- inspired match sculpture. You will use individual matches, building up a layer at a time, sticking them together with a hot glue gun.

8 Task 3 Once you have completed your Mach-inspired match you will need to photograph it before we set it on fire! You will work in pairs so that one person can photograph and the other can video your pieces being set alight and burning. Make sure you take several photographs as evidence of the performance art piece and also save the video to CD to go into your sketchbook. When you piece has been burned it will, of course, be very brittle, so handle it with care. Photograph it in its burnt state and document this in your sketchbook as well.

9 Homework Mach influence page:
Having looked at the work of David Mach and having responded to his work in your transcription, now produce an Influence Page in your sketchbook. Include the following: Lots of example images of his work. Information about the artist, though NOT biographical; get info about how he works, where he gets his influence/inspiration from etc. A piece of detailed written analysis (use the 4C model to help) of either just 1 piece, or about the collection of these type of sculptures. A 2nd, smaller scale transcription (perhaps of a hand or close-up feature) but not burned. Include your opinion on his work.
