Conceptual framework demonstrating the intersection between local food and health systems and specific opportunities to improve overall health and address the full spectrum of malnutrition in the context of low-income and middle-income countries. Conceptual framework demonstrating the intersection between local food and health systems and specific opportunities to improve overall health and address the full spectrum of malnutrition in the context of low-income and middle-income countries. Definitions of food and health systems are drawn from the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the WHO, respectively. The framework was developed based on evidence that diverse diets including fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes and select animal-based products such as eggs can reduce the risk of stunting, micronutrient deficiencies, overweight/obesity and nutrition-related non-communicable diseases and that healthcare institution-based interventions can directly improve intake of these foods.
