2 The Two Koreas At the end of WW2:
The US took control of the southern half. The Soviet Union took control of the northern half 1947 the UN ordered free elections I1948 it became two countries: The Capitalist Democratic South or: Republic of Korea And a Communist dictatorship under Kim, Il-Sung in the North. the“Democratic Peoples’ Republic of Korea”

3 Invasion and Police Action
In June North Korea invaded South Korea. They almost won. The UN authorized a “Police Action” The US and Allies invaded at Inchon and drove them back almost to China The Chinese joined and drove the US back to the 38 Parallel. In 1953 a truce was signed and the fighting stopped but a state of war still exists

4 An ignorant & starving people
After the truce the regime in the North became more and more isolated. Rule was passed down from Father to son to grandson. News and media are completely controlled, the people of North Korea know nothing about the outside world. Food shortages are common and people are routinely sent to work-camps for political crimes 1994 Rule was passed from Kim, Il-Sung to his Son Kim Jong-Il 2011 rule was passed to his Grandson Kim, Jong-un

5 An Nuclear Threat North Korea has tested both atomic weapons and missiles It poses a nuclear threat to South Korea, Japan and parts of Alaska (6/10/13) the North Koreans called off a meeting with South Korea. They threatened war once again.
