Production of fortified salt and flour
National Strategy and actions on prevention of micronutrient deficiency Azerbaijan Production of fortified salt and flour - Iodized salt is produced by 14 officially registered salt enterprises with factual productivity from 0,5 up to 12 tons/a day. The overall daily output is tons/a day All enterprises are equipped with iodization equipments. The volume of potassium iodate was 2000 kgs since the year of 1999. 3 enterprises received semiautomatic packaging machines and WYD checkers for quantitative determination of iodine Fortified flour is produced by 6 pilot mills with productivity from 60 up to 300 tons/a day. The overall daily output of the mills is more than 720 tons/a day. - The mills are equipped with 8 dosers supplements for forlification of flour of 20 tons

Communication and social mobilization
National Strategy and plan of actions on prevention of micronutrient deficiency Azerbaijan Communication and social mobilization Trainings and seminars. - The overall 232 trainings and seminars were organized for 5600 people inclusive doctors, teachers, representatives of salt and flour enterprises, community, different NGOs, Mass Media, executive power, and customs officers. - Study tour on fortified food control and biological monitoring was organized for government staff in Bulgaria National Conferences. - “National Day on Fighting with Iodine Deficiency and Universal Salt Iodization”, “National Day on Fighting with Iron Deficiency ANAEMIA”, “The Day of Healthy Child” with involvement of great number of representatives of Mass Media and Press Communication Campaigns. - Campaigns were organized by youth organizations in the regions of the Republic through distribution of booklets, T-shirts, caps and test-kits at schools and to households; - Youth poster exhibition for best child posters dedicated to the micronutrient deficiency - More than 70,000 copies of posters, booklets, leaflets, educational materials, 4000 child t-shirts, and 4000 summer caps with the label “Iodized salt for your Health” and “Healthy Nutrition” and 4 video sets produced and distributed - Advocacy meetings, TV programs, press releases and publication of articles

Provision of supplies for state structures responsible for quality control and utilization of fortified food 7 sets of laboratory equipments for determination of iodine in salt (Centre of Hygiene and Epidemiology (CHE), Central Customs Laboratory, the Department of Medical University) 10 sets of WYD checker have already been used by laboratories of CHE, sanitary quarantine service and NGOs). 30 more sets have been received 58515 test-kits for determination of iodine in salt 2 spectrophotometers, laboratory equipment and chemical reagents for quality control of fortified flour (Centres of Hygiene and Epidemiology)

Main Achievements: National Law On Universal Salt Iodization
National Strategy and plan of actions on prevention of micronutrient deficiency Azerbaijan Main Achievements: National Law On Universal Salt Iodization National Standards for iodized salt and fortified flour Regulations «Оn order of secondary processing and iodization of salt», are developed and are on the premises of confirmation Provision of laboratories of public control over the quality of fortified products has been improved The number of salt producers increased up to 14 from 1999 Provision of enterprises has been improved for internal control of fortification quality The common logo is used for fortified products Permanent monitoring with quarterly reports, enabling to track the situation of fortified food in market, at the household level and in food industry is carried out by Social organizations (ICU, UPT, youth organizations). The monitoring of enterprises is also carried out. The level of consumption of iodized salt increased from 44%(2002) up to 82%(2004) The level of iodized salt production increased from 32%(2002) to 68%(2003)

Prevention of Vitamin А deficiency
National Strategy and plan of actions on prevention of micronutrient deficiency Azerbaijan Prevention of Vitamin А deficiency In the framework of Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) (decree MH N 122 as of ) I. Preparation work - Development of instructive-methodical material: Instruction «On utilization of Vitamin A for prophylaxis» as of , methodical manual «Apply of Vitamin A in Expanded Program of Immunization» - Correction and printing of immunization cards with calendar of vaccines, including Vitamin A - Development of information material (posters, leaflets) II. Trainings (by cascade system) for medical staff (epidemiologists, pediatricians, gynecologists, workers of maternities) in 51 regions of the Republic. The trainings are completed in 25 regions, about 500 persons were involved III capsules of Vitamin А were received by IU. Immunization with appliance of Vitamin A began from March. IV. Implementation of monitoring planned at all levels: maternities, child policlinics, rural area hospitals
