Gliding Scholarship Exercise 7 WINCH LAUNCH CFS Gliding Examiners © 2008
2
Gliding Scholarship To take-off, climb and release AIM
3
Gliding Scholarship 1.Wind speed and direction 2.Clear of other aircraft – lookout ahead, above and behind 3.Planning for a launch failure 4.Launch orders and signals AIRMANSHIP
4
Gliding Scholarship You will be shown: How to conduct the take-off checks and launch procedure How to fly the ground roll How to enter the initial climb How to enter and maintain the full climb How to recognise the top of the launch How to release the cable at the top of the launch THE WINCH LAUNCH WINCH LAUNCH
5
Gliding Scholarship WINCH LAUNCH Initial Climb Ground run Full Climb Top of Launch Release Transition
6
Gliding Scholarship TAKE-OFF CHECKS AND LAUNCH PROCEDURE Complete the take-off checks from the FRC All controls central Select a reference point ahead – winch if visible Wings level Cable on Check clear ahead then ask all clear above and behind TAKE-OFF CHECKS AND LAUNCH PROCEDURE
7
Gliding Scholarship TAKE-OFF CHECKS AND LAUNCH PROCEDURE 1 rst Order - Take up slack - signal with left hand Return hand close to cable release 2 nd Order All Out - signal with left hand Return hand close to cable release To stop the launch at any stage shoutSTOP STOP STOP and release the cable. If you hear anyone else shout STOP STOP STOP release the cable immediately
8
Gliding Scholarship GROUND ROLL Keep wings level with aileron Keep straight with rudder Select the ground roll attitude (aircraft balanced on mainwheel) with elevator Coarse inputs are required until airspeed increases. Control inputs during the ground roll are unco- ordinated GROUND ROLL
9
Gliding Scholarship INITIAL CLIMB Once airborne select the initial climbing attitude Use co-ordinated controls Check:Clear of the ground Speed above 50 kt Accelerating Before smoothly transitioning into the full climb INITIAL CLIMB
10
Gliding Scholarship FULL CLIMB Elevator to maintain full climb attitude (knees on the horizon) Co-ordinated controls to keep wings level Ideal speed 55-60 kt Speed above 60kt signal by yawing left and right, above 65kt release cable Speed below 55 kt lower nose, below 50 kt release cable FULL CLIMB
11
Gliding Scholarship RELEASE Recognition of top of the Launch: Nose pitches slowly towards the horizon Rate of climb reduces Winch power may reduce Cable may back release To release the cable: Lower the nose to below the normal glide Pause Pull the cable release twice Select the normal gliding attitude and trim RELEASE
