Properties of carbon Chapter 4 section 1

Key concepts How is carbon able to form such a huge variety of compounds? What are four forms of pure carbon?

Key terms Diamond Graphite Fullerene nanotube

Carbon atoms and bonding
Few elements have the ability of carbon to bond with both itself and other elements in so many different ways. With four valence electrons, each carbon atom is able to form four bonds.

Forms of pure carbon Diamond, graphite, fullerenes, and nanotubes are for forms of the element carbon. Diamonds: the hardest mineral which forms deep within the Earth under high temperatures and pressures. Each carbon atom is bonded strongly to four other carbon atoms. Extremely hard and non reactive. Forms crystal structures.

Pure forms of carbon Graphite: A form of the element carbon in which a carbon atom is bonded tightly to three other carbon atoms. These layers are very weak and can slide past each other. Pencil marks Graphite reduces friction between the moving parts

Pure forms of carbon Fullerenes: carbon atoms arranged in the shape of a hollow spere Nanotubes: carbon atoms arranged in the shape of a long, hollow cylinder, or tube
