The following theories present different viewpoints from which we can consider works of art. Each one represents a tradition or convention with aesthetic philosophies.

2. Imitationalism
realistic interpretation of the subject matter is most important
successful = reminds us of the real world.

3. Emotionalism
communication of moods, feelings and ideas are most important
successful = expresses emotions / ideas well

4. Formalism
organization of the elements and principles of design are most important
successful = art that is visually interesting (does NOT need to be realistic or expressive)
