Hamlet: Act 2, Scene 2 Hidden Meaning: According to Polonius, “There’s a method to [Hamlet’s] madness,” meaning there are hints of truth within Hamlet’s ramblings. Choose one of the things Hamlet says in an effort to appear crazy and write it down. Then, give me a brief analysis – what could be a hidden meaning or truth behind Hamlet’s words? Explain your reasoning. Hidden Meaning: Choose one of the allusions Hamlet makes in this scene. (A) First, write down the quote. (B) Next, research the historical context. Who/what is Hamlet referring to? (C) Analyze its significance in regards to the play. Why does Hamlet make that specific allusion? Does the allusion foreshadow anything, or hint at something Hamlet might be feeling? Explain your reasoning. Inferred Main Idea: In Act I, Scene 5, Hamlet says, “It is an honest ghost.” Yet in this scene, he says, “The spirit that I have seen may be the devil.” Why do you think has Hamlet changed his mind about the ghost? Explain your reasoning. Inferred Main Idea: Why do you think Hamlet admits to Guildenstern and Rosencrantz that “[he’s] only crazy sometimes”? Why does he choose to give them a hint about his plans? Explain your reasoning. Inferred Main Idea: During Hamlet’s soliloquy, he experiences powerful feelings of self-loathing. What causes these feelings? Why is he so upset with himself? Use textual evidence to support your response.
