1 Photography You will be able to distinguish good photo composition using 6 basic photo techniques
Tuesday Nov 5th

2 Key Terms Cropping Sizing
The cutting or marking of a photograph to eliminate unnecessary material and highlight important elements Sizing Reducing or enlarging a cropped photo to fit exactly in a space on the layout

3 Key Terms Rule of Thirds Halftone Photo Essay
A method of composing photographs in which the field of vision is divided into thirds horizontally and vertically and the image is placed at the intersection of any two lines Halftone A screen that prepares a photographic image for reproduction by converting it into a series of tiny dots Photo Essay A story told in pictures – generally involving 3 to 7 photographs

4 Good Photo Composition
Keep it simple Good photographs are simple. The best ones involve 1 or 2 centers of visual interest. They have nothing distracting and include only what’s relevant. Fill the frame When you shoot most photographs, move up close to the subject.

5 Good Photo Composition
Fill the frame

6 Good Photo Composition
Framing Frame your subject

7 Good Photo Composition
Avoid Mergers and Awkward Cuts Objects that seem to merge into the subject, such as light poles growing out of heads, are distracting to the viewer. The same goes for anything disconnected in the photo. Use the rule of thirds As you shoot, divide the frame into thirds both horizontally and vertically

8 Good Photo Composition
Rule of Thirds Place your subject at the intersection of any two lines.

15 Good Photo Composition
Try various Angles and Viewpoints For a wider range of shots, photograph a scene from different angles—from above, below, to the side, etc.

16 Good Photo Composition
Various Angles

17 Good Photo Composition
Enhance posed shots In general, avoid posed shots. But, when you have to do posed shots, try to enhance them. For example, shoot the swim team in the pool. Work with patterns, curves and leading lines Repetition is an effective composition element. Having a pattern broken by some action makes a good photo as well. Similarly, having a subject at the beginning or the end of a leading line or curve can draw the reader into the action

18 Good Photo Composition
Give Meaning to an image A good photograph must do more than just present a subject doing something. It must present a subject doing something in a meaningful way.

19 Class Activity Take a yearbook Find assigned photograph
Be ready to share
