Guidelines for Notetaking
Do not try to write down everything the speaker says. Stick to: **main ideas **details that support or relate to the main ideas. Take notes in phrases, not in complete sentences. *Begin each phrase with a capital letter.

Remember to: capitalize proper nouns. Use abbreviations or symbols when you can. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT THEY MEAN!!!!!!! begin main ideas at the left margin. write supporting details under the main ideas. Use a dash (-) at the beginning of each supporting details.

Conflicts, questions or issues Similarities and differences Causes and effects Questions posed and answers given Steps in processes Opinions and facts presented Title and author Subject/ topic Purpose of the selection Thesis – major point of the selection as a whole Significant people and places facts and figures events
