Content Status update on TF5 Next step activities

Status update on TF5 Cell/module level test proposals for review on Feb. 15th, 2014; Teleconference held on April 9th( comments from OICA, Korea and SK Continental before this meeting); Teleconference held on October 15th ( comments from OICA and Japan after this meeting);

Status update on TF5 Japan expressed that the whole vehicle and system design could guarantee the EV safety; OICA comments are as follows: Regarding nail penetration test item: Experience has shown that short circuit can still occur in the field even for cells that have previously passed the nail penetration test, so the nail penetration test is not suitable as a method for testing for internal short circuit; Regarding oven test item: the scenario might not apply to module level since the heat caused by single cell will not create such temperature environment of whole module; Regarding crush test item: vehicle and battery system level safety already determined through other existing tests, there is no need for a crush test;

Status update on TF5 China suggested that nail penetration, oven and crush three test items be considered as part of EVS-TGR and further discussion because these items display the characteristics of cell/module level, which couldn’t be verified by vehicle or battery system; these three items finally display the thermal characteristic following the happening of thermal propagation behavior; OICA appreciated the clarification of the objective of these tests and noted that there is another approach to address from system level; Japan suggested to form a new task force to address thermal propagation issue at vehicle/system level; OICA commented that since both TFs will address the same issue, i.e. thermal propagation, the TFs can be merged into one TF; US NHTSA expressed that it had done crush item test on the cell, module and pack level; US, Japan and China are doing thermal propagation test and would provide test data for discussion in 6th EVS-GTR meeting in Korea.

Next Step Activities China provides the objective, criteria, and methodology of oven test item before Korea meeting; China provides the simulation phenomena and condition of nail penetration and crush test items before Korea meeting; Japan provides its proposal on thermal propagation test for IG participants and TF-5 members before Korea meeting; US, Japan and China will provide the test data and procedure of thermal propagation test on the level of cell, module and/or system for discussion in Korea meeting; IG will discuss the suggestion whether forming a new TF on thermal propagation test or not in Korea meeting.
