The X-axis shows the time and method used for fixation: 4% non-buffered formaldehyde (4nBF), 4% buffered formaldehyde (4BF), 36% non-diluted, non-buffered formaldehyde (36nBF). Degraded formaldehyde was simulated by adding 4% formic acid to 4% buffered formaldehyde (4BF+A). Fixation times were 1, 22, and 46h.
