Scientist Albert Einstein developed the theory of relativity, suggesting that time and space are NOT constant. This made everyone question the world around them. Psychologist Sigmund Freud came up with the idea of the unconscious mind, which made people lose faith in reason.

In the 1920s, young people are willing to break with the past and experiment with different values. Women take on new roles.

Europe After the War The New European democracies formed after the WWI were weak. (especially in Germany) Many Germans blame the democratic Weimar Republic for their countries problems. Inflation in Germany cause German Marks to be worth nothing.

The Great Depression In the late 1920s, the U.S. economy has serious weaknesses. Uneven distribution of wealth Overproduction by business and agriculture. A lessened demand for consumer goods. Causes people to default on loans to the bank! Banks closed and people were still gambling in the stock market!
