1
Safety in the Science Lab (vocabulary terms)
2
Concentration-amount of material dissolved in another material.
Example: 1mL of food coloring dissolved in 100mL of water is not as concentrated as 25mL of food coloring dissolved in the same volume of water.
3
Corrosive-material that dissolves or eats through another material.
Sulfuric acid is a corrosive chemical that can burn through metal or skin.
4
Flammable-catches on fire easily
Example: Gasoline is a very flammable material that catches on fire easily.
5
Fumes-visible or invisible vapors
Example: Robert could smell the fumes of the sulfur because it was not kept in a tightly-sealed container.
6
Toxic-poisonous Example: Toxic household cleaners like bleach and ammonia should be kept away from children because if swallowed they can cause sickness and or death.
7
Ventilate-to cause air to move in and out easily
Example: Open the window so we can ventilate the room.
8
Volatile-easily changing into a gas or vapor
Example: Alcohol is volatile because it is a liquid that evaporates into a gas easily.
9
Wafting-gently moving the air back and forth with your hand
Example: Wafting is a better way to check for a substance’s odor because the gas is not as concentrated when it enters your nose.
