Mohammed Ghori invaded India and laid the foundation of the Muslim dominion in India. He expanded the empire onto Northern India. 1556 Akbar the Great becomes the Mughal Emperor. He will establish a centralised system of administration. 1498 Vasco da Gama arrives to India and establishes trade between Europe and India. Among these were gold, spices, and other riches. The Delhi Sultanate is founded. The former was responsible for repelling invasions of the Mongol empire. 1210 1526 The Mughal Dynasty is founded. At its height, the Mughal Empire was the third largest empire of the Indian subcontinent.

1885 Establishment of Indian National Congress Party that utterly dominated Indian politics until the 1920s. The Indian National Congress was founded on nationalist ideas against British rule. Queen Elizabeth I grants charter The British East India Company establishes trading stations at Surat, Bombay, and Calcutta. 1757 The crown establishes an unofficial colonial rule. Britain colonized India with indirect rule for about 100 years. Anglo-French War in India Diplomatic and military struggle between the French East India Company and the British East India Company. 1748 1857 Formal colonial rule is established as a result of the Sepoy Rebellion, which had root causes when British rule replaced Indian aristocracy.

Jawaharlal Nehru becomes prime minister. Considered to be the architect of the modern Indian nation-state: a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. Rajiv Gandhi served as prime minister after the assassination of his mother. His period in office was mired in controversies; several scandals damaged his corruption-free image. 1921 Mahatma Gandhi assumes leadership in the Indian National Congress and conducts social campaigns for independence against British rule. India achieves independence from Britain; India and Pakistan are partitioned; modern Indian state is founded; parliamentary democracy is instated. 1947 Indira Gandhi is prime minister (except for a brief period from 1977 to 1980). The first and, to date, the only female Prime Minister of India. Gandhi was known for her political intransigence and centralisation of power.

Bharatiya Janata Party-dominated coalition government. The former was the largest party of Hindu nationalism. Defeated Indira Gandhi her Indian National Congress Party. 2014-present Narendra Modi is prime minister. Member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was alleged to be responsible for the deaths of more than 1,000 Muslims during civil unrest but was later exonerated. Congress Party-dominated coalition government, the United Progressive Alliance. The UPA government espoused a strongly pro-farmer message and sought to introduce rural programs to revitalize the agrarian economy and infrastructure.
