The LBJ Brand on the Presidency Johnson Battles Goldwater in 1964 The 1960s saw many political, social, and cultural changes as Americans began making their own transitions, as they saw fit, in the U.S. Elected president in 1963 after the assassination of JFK, Lyndon Johnson encouraged Congress in Washington to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964, ending discrimination in “most private facilitates open to the public”, which also supported the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Johnson also sought to overcome poverty through his domestic plan, the Great Society. In 1964, influenced by the Republican Party, Senator Barry Goldwater “attacked the federal income tax, the Social Security System, the Tennessee Valley Authority, civil rights legislation, the nuclear test-ban and the Great Society.” Two American destroyers were targeted by North Vietnamese, resulting in the passing of the Tonkin Gulf Resolution
