What is Carsharing? Classic, round-trip carsharing

Carsharing is primarily designed for shorter time and shorter distance trips as an extension of the public transportation network a public service designed to enhance mobility options. Carsharing organizations discourage private car ownership by Getting members to drive less often plan trips more use other modes of transportation more and drive more fuel efficient vehicles when a car is needed.

Emerging carsharing models
One-way (point to point) Peer-to-Peer Carsharing Ride Sharing Transportation Networking Companies One Way, Point-to-Point Operating area, City parking, station-based private parking (subsitute for taxi and public transit) Car2Go Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal Peer to Peer or Personal Vehicle Sharing Legislations governs insurance and not-for-profit status Ride Sharing & TNCs Traditional definition of ride sharing includes an understanding of cost recovery and not for profit. These models have also run into regulatory issues as they compete with taxis and coach bus services. Sharing Economy & Regulatory Trouble Cost recovery basis, but not for profit. Escapes existing regulations. Sharing has been around for a long time, but only recently has become big business. Avis Zipcar, Enterprise RentaCar acquiring PhillyCarshare, Mint, and IGO. Grassroots vs. Big Business The original classic CSOs, the founding members of the CarSharing Association objective is a social mission to improve communities. Now it is big business Zipcar acquired by Avis Budget for $500 million in January . Uber received $250 million from Google in August. None of these models have proven their social and environmental benefits through academic research.

How does carsharing work?
Internet and Smartphone Telematics Multimodal Integration Smartphones We have also noticed that people organizing their trips last minute with the majority of users booking rides only 1 days before departure. it’s clear that people are increasingly using their phone to find a vehicle on-the-go. Telematics – On board computers that use RFID cards readers to authenticate users and unlock vehicles. GPS systems to track location and speed. Other on board monitors that give indicators of vehicle health and usage (i.e. fuel levels, acceleration and braking performance)

Integration of shared mobility modes
All of these modes are part of the solution for getting people to give up private car ownership. Some people in public transit see carsharing as competition

Academic Research A major study of carsharing and associated behavioral changes was conducted by University of California Berkeley using 2008 data Summarize research methodology and findings here. 2 minutes. Studies have shown that joining a carsharing organization causes people to sell cars or defer purchases of cars. One car sharing vehicle takes between cars off the road. Studies have also shown that people reduce the total vehicle miles travelled and reduce CO2 emissions after joining a carsharing organization. Slight decreases is transit ridership.
