The U.S. Preparing for Total War
Country devoting all of it’s resources to war. Wartime governments took control of the economy and told factories what to produce Facilities were converted to munitions factories

Unemployment Almost disappeared in many European countries
Recruited foreign workers to meet the demand Unemployment rose after end of WWI

Rationing People could buy only small amounts of items needed for war.
Items included: coal meat, butter, cheese, shoe leather

Women in WWI Women replaced men in factories & offices
Women built tanks, ran hospitals, supplied troops. Most left the work force after the war, but it showed the world that women were very capable

Civil Unrest in Russia War related shortages of food and fuel
5.5 millions soldiers killed or wounded by 1917 Many Russians wanted the war to end On the brink of revolution- leads to Nicholas II to abdicate the throne
