This shows jean is old and not fit enough to bear another child. She fears for the pain of carrying another child and also for having to care for another on top of all her other children, this lead to her taking her own life and her children's.

This shows now that her mother is gone Chris must take her place and become play mother in her house. She has to take over her mothers duties and can no longer pursue her dreams of becoming a teacher. 63

This shows that mother was the playful parent, she, let the kids have fun and let loose. When she died, the playful nature also died.
