Informal communication – giving and receiving messages in casual, person-to-person interactions, rather than in structured situations such as speeches or debates

Practical communication- direct, useful, and goal- oriented
Social communication- friendly, cordial, and enjoyable

Directions- instructions for finding a particular place

Giving directions: Give directions fluently Select simplest route Give in a series of logical steps Use visual terms Consider drawing map Repeat if necessary

Receiving directions:
Ask clearly Listen carefully Repeat the directions back Thank the person

Social call – call made for personal reasons

Business call- call made to a company or organization to request information or help, to make a complaint, or to take care of some other business matter

Introduction – to present one person to another

Order of names – the order in which people are introduced

According to tradition, you should first state the name of the person is:
Higher in achievement or status Who is older If 1&2 don’t apply, the person most familiar to you

Conversation-the informal exchange of thoughts and feelings by two people

Open questions – must be answered with an explanation
Closed questions – can be answered with a yes or no Follow-up questions – relates to the subject matter of an earlier question

Paraphrasing- stating in your own words what someone else has said

Disagreement – a difference of opinion among two or more people

Problem-solving method:
Identify the problem Determine the nature and causes Talk about possible ways to solve the problem Select the best way

Discussion- talking through a problem by following the problem- solving method

Constructive feedback –evaluating a problem to negotiate a solution
