Writer’s Workshop Launching – Day 2
Teaching Point: Writers revisit narrative elements to gain a deeper understanding of their purpose for writing. They use mentor poems to make connections and gather seed ideas for their writing. Active Engagement: Paste the 6 Elements of Narrative Verse in your journals for reference. Copy the Narrative Elements chart in your journal. Together we will read a poem and examine its narrative elements. Independent Practice: Choose 2 other poems from your packet and record the narrative elements on your chart. Now create a list in your notebook of connections made with the poems you read. Any stories from your life you remembered during these readings should also be included in the list. Remember: Narrative poetry is poetry that tells a story. Narrative poetry has characters, dialogue, conflicts, plot and setting. The difference between a story and narrative poem is that the narrative poem is in poetic form not in prose. It relies on rhythm and rhyme and is arranged in stanzas. Materials: Copies of mentor poem packets to handout to students. - 6 Elements of Narrative Verse handout for journals - Exploring Narrative Elements chart for AE modeling
