1 Cells and Living Things
SOL 5.5

2 What is a cell? A cell is the basic structural unit of all living things. The smallest part of a living thing that can carry out all the life processes.

3 Cells Complete the web with four characteristics of cells.
All organisms -living things- are made of cells. Cells do the jobs that keep organisms alive. Cells Cells are the smallest part of a living thing. These cells are like tiny building blocks.

4 There are TWO types of cells:
Animal Cells Plant Cells

5 Label the animal cell. cytoplasm Cell membrane Nucleus

6 Nucleus The cell part that controls the cell’s activities. It is like the human brain! Put it in your own words! Why is it important?

7 Jelly-like material that fills the empty space inside of the cell.
Cytoplasm Jelly-like material that fills the empty space inside of the cell. Put it in your own words! Why is it important?

8 Cell membrane A thin layer that makes up the outside of the cell and controls what enters and exits the cell. Put it in your own words! Why is it important?

9 A storage space in a cell. It stores food, water, and waste.
vacuole A storage space in a cell. It stores food, water, and waste. Put it in your own words! Why is it important?

10 Label the plant cell. nucleus chloroplasts Cell wall cytoplasm
Cell membrane

11 Chloroplast The green cell part in plant cells that holds chlorophyll for making food. Put it in your own words! Why is it important?

12 A stiff outer layer that helps keep plant cells firm.
Cell wall A stiff outer layer that helps keep plant cells firm. Put it in your own words! Why is it important?

13 What is part of a plant cell that is not part of an animal cell?
Cell wall Chloroplast

14 Compare and Contrast plant and animal cells.
