Mayflower landed in Massachusetts, not Virginia as planned.
The charter with Virginia company was nullified.
The colonists wrote “The Mayflower Compact” in order to establish order and govern the settlement.

Based on the concept of majority rule
First known document for self-government in America
First democratic government in America – colonists chose leaders and made their own laws.
Adult males (not including servants) could vote on issues.
Expressed the belief that everyone was equal “in the sight of God.”
Often cited as one of the foundational documents influencing the US Constitution
