Genitive and of-construction

Let’s start from the beginning
Nouns may take an -'s ("apostrophe s") or GENITIVE MARKER to indicate possession: the boy's pen a spider's web my girlfriend's brother John's house plural form: the boys' pens the spiders' webs the Browns' house The genitive marker should not be confused with the 's form of contracted verbs, as in John's a good boy (= John is a good boy).

Usually we use –of when talking about inanimate things
The wheels of the car The roof of this house

Of-construction After nouns that are used when talking about number, amount, measurement Example: hundreds of bees a glass of coke a bunch of keys

Between the name of a season and a year
Example: In the winter of 1998 But! In the year 2005

After the words kind and sort:
All kinds of animals A sort of fairy tale

Between some geographical nouns and the name that follows:
The Kingdom of Denmark The County of Essex (Other similar words are province, republic, city, town, village, state, isle, island

Sometimes you can use double genitive:
A good friend of my brother’s (en god vän till min bror)
