1 Matter

2 You have learned that… Landforms are physical features on Earth’s surface made of rock that change slowly over time because of processes in the Earth. Rock changes slowly over time into other types of rock and is made of smaller structures called minerals. Fossil fuels are resources from the Earth that we use to power our lives, though there are both benefits and consequences to their use.

3 You will learn that… All matter in the universe is made of small particles that can have different charges. Charges can move from one place to another through electric currents, and can be built into an electric circuit that powers technology. Magnetism is a force related to electricity, and these forces can be used to transfer energy from one place to another.

8 Matter Matter is made of very tiny structures called molecules.
Molecules make up most of the matter you see around you! Examples: Water Carbon Dioxide Oxygen Gas Sugars, Fats, and Proteins Hydrocarbons The list goes on…!

9 Atoms Molecules are made of even smaller structures called atoms.
Atoms are the basic units (pieces) of matter. Atoms can be found in different elements, which are different sizes of atoms. Different elements act differently.

10 Atoms Atoms are very very small!

11 Atoms Atoms are made of two different charges.
Charges are the two different forces that hold on to each other to allow atoms/matter to stay existing. Positive (+) charges called protons. Negative (-) charges called electrons. Opposite charges attract (pull) each other and same charges repel (push) each other. Atoms with equal numbers of positive and negative charge are neutral.
