General Eisenhower was the Supreme Allied Commander in World War 2 responsible for the Allied war effort. He would later become President of the US in 1952. General Eisenhower was against the dropping of the bomb. He has described it as ‘that awful thing’ and made it clear that there was no need to drop it. In his opinion Japan was trying to surrender and was just looking for a way to ‘save face’ in July He believed they were a spent military force by July 1945 and surrender was inevitable. He was told about the bomb in July 1945 and expressed his opposition to it – which annoyed political leaders at the time It is important to note that Eisenhower was the supreme military commander who would have wanted a clean military victory without having to resort to weapons of mass destruction. He believed this would harm the reputation of the USA. He may also have been angry at not having been informed of the bomb until as late as July It should also be noted that Eisenhower was a Republican president in 1952 although was not openly Republican in Truman was a Democrat President.
