Newton’s Laws of Motion
2
About Newton Born 1643 - Died 1727
Studied physics, math, astronomy, and alchemy
3
Newton’s First Law Also called the law of inertia
Law: An object in motion will stay in motion and an object at rest will stay at rest unless a net force acts upon it.
4
Newton’s Second Law The acceleration of an object is equal to the net force on an object divided by its mass. a=F/m or F=ma Force = mass x acceleration Units = Newtons
5
Newton’s Third Law For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Not what goes up, must come down
6
Momentum Similar to inertia Momentum = mass x velocity p = mv
Units = kg*m/s
7
Law of Conservation of Momentum
Momentum is neither gained nor lost, it is only transferred. Let’s try it!
