1 Cloud UW BACKGROUND 26 Sep 2008 T. Gray

2 What is Cloud Computing?
SaaS: Software as a Service PaaS: Platform as a Service Not "outsourcing the IT dept"... But includes hosted svcs that overlap current central svcs Not highly-negotiated custom contract services General model: low cost via scale and tech & contract standardization (apts vs. cust. houses)‏ Enabler: pervasive, high-speed Internet Full circle: mainframe -> mini -> PC -> "cloudframe" Focus: productivity tools, not enterprise apps

3 Motivations Cost Flexibility; dynamic load handling
Easier cross-institution collaboration Any-time, any-place, any-device access Alternative if dept'l or central IT non-responsive This is where our students/fac/staff will be! Better alignment of IT resources with institutional priorities Future of computing, esp. eScience

4 Barriers Loss of control (mirrors traditional central/decentral debate)‏ Integration with enterprise auth; single-sign-on Integration with key enterprise apps (esp cal)‏ Accessibility and UI limitations of web apps Performance and availability concerns Policy/compliance concerns (privacy, eDiscov.)‏ Breach forensics and mitigation

5 Market Trends/Examples
MS: 25% will be using cloud svcs by 2010 Google: ASU, RI School of Design, ... Zoho: General Electric (400,000 seats)‏ Amazon: hosting many startups

6 Current Activities Individual (e.g. MS Live, Google docs, Gmail...)‏
Departmental (e.g. gCal, Blackboard, EC2/S3)‏ Central Alumni via MS ExchangeLabs Google Apps discussion Broader MS apps discussion Policy/guideline framework Goal: enabling individual & dept'l use with better compliance

7 Timing Concern about inaction increasing risk to UW
Urgency/opportunity re Microsoft Urgency/opportunity re Google

8 Discussion Topics Goal of broad contracts w/MS and Google?
Does contract increase or decrease risk? Consequences of no contract? Objections to Google contract for PRA/FIA info? Beyond that? Policy/guidelines for using cloud svcs... Relationship to data security standard? Unresolved concerns?
