Figure 1 | Transmission of pain by NGF. The neurotrophin β-nerve growth factor (NGF) is released upon injury and causes pain by activating its receptor (TrkA) on nociceptors and mast cells (which causes the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine), leading to transmission of pain signals from the periphery to the spinal cord and brain via the dorsal ganglion.
