2. Work the fractions first, then work the whole numbers.

2. 3 3/4 Regrouping with addition: + 1 2/4
Convert any improper fractions to mixed numbers. Don’t forget to add the new whole numbers to the ones you already had!

3. 5 1/3 Regrouping with subtraction: Method #1 - 2 2/3
Convert the mixed numbers to improper fractions and subtract, then change your answer back into a mixed number.

4. 5 1/3 Regrouping with subtraction: Method #2 - 2 2/3
Another way is to “borrow” from the whole numbers by taking one of our wholes and changing it to an equivalent fraction with the same denominator.
